Over the past six years, several major life sciences organizations have worked on this project with IBM Research gaining access to a comprehensive chemical library extracted from worldwide patents and scientific abstracts. Public structure extraction tools developed by researchers at the National Institutes of Health were also used successfully in this project.
Advanced data analysis, advanced statistics, database management, web analytics, predictive modeling and marketing analytics are just some of the program’s areas of study. The program also includes electives in fraud detection and web analytics. For example, helping students learn how predictive analytics can root out fraud at insurance companies, predict energy usage, or improve customer buying experiences.
“Honestly, what we know about here at Microsoft is but a tiny fraction of what is actually going on,” said Bill Crounse, a medical doctor and Microsoft’s senior director of worldwide health, referring to medical uses of Kinect. “Everywhere I go in the world – every hospital, college or public health organization, people are already doing something with Kinect or they plan to.”
This promotion of business analytics techniques and tools will enable a new generation of students, helping the Xi’an Lab with a pipeline of students with necessary skills, and will help to build up the business analytics ecosystem in China. One of the company’s investors was Enterprise Ireland, which helps Irish companies achieve global success.
